Description Andrew Johnson was born into poverty in N.C.  He apprenticed as a tailor and settled in Tennessee.  In 1862, Lincoln appointed Johnson military governor of Tennessee after it was retaken.  A Southern Unionist and War Democrat, he was vice president in Lincoln’s second term, becoming president upon Lincoln’s assassination.  After the war he favored quick restoration of the seceded states to the Union.  His vision of reconstruction in the South differed widely from what Lincoln had planned.  He was opposed to the 14th Amendment, which gave citizenship to African Americans.  Impeached by the House of Representatives, he narrowly avoided conviction in the Senate.  He lost the primary in his reelection campaign.  In 1875, he was elected to the Senate, the only former president to do so. This U.S. Vice President Andrew Johnson History Mug is part of our U.S. Vice Presidents Series which includes all of the US Vice Presidents. The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont. Mugs are food and microwave safe. To preserve photographic quality we recommend hand washing. Mugs are usually shipped within 3-5 days.
