Description Hubert H. Humphrey worked as a pharmacist before returning to academia and becoming a political science professor. He was elected to the Senate in 1948, the same year his proposal for ending racial segregation was included in the party platform. Humphrey was the lead author of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and introduced the first initiative to create the Peace Corps. He suggested the Democratic Party “walk into the sunshine of human rights.” He ran for and lost in the Democratic primary presidential campaigns of 1952 and 1960. When Lyndon Johnson inherited the presidency after Kennedy’s assassination, Johnson chose Hubert H. Humphrey to be his running mate in the landslide election of 1964. When Johnson chose not to run for reelection in 1968, Humphrey ran for the presidency and lost to former vice president Richard Nixon in the general election. This U.S. Vice President Hubert H.
