10th US Vice President John Tyler

Description John Tyler was elected vice president on the Whig ticket with William Henry Harrison in 1840.  Tyler became president when Harrison died after only 32 days in office.  Tyler was the first vice president to succeed to the presidency on the death of an incumbent. John Tyler moved into the White House and assumed full presidential powers, setting a precedent that eventually became the 25th Amendment.  He favored the annexation of Texas, opposed federalism and supported statesʼ rights.  He was not reelected in 1844 and retired to his plantation in Virginia.  When the Civil War broke out, Tyler sided with the Confederacy and was elected to the Confederate House of Representatives. The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
