Description Charles Dawes was a banker, politician and WWI military general before his election as the 30th vice president. He was a co-recipient of the 1925 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on the Dawes Plan for war reparations. When Dawes finished his term as vice president, he served as ambassador to the United Kingdom. As the Great Depression ravaged the country, Herbert Hoover appealed to Dawes to leave the diplomatic office and head the newly created Reconstruction Finance Corporation. Charles Dawes headed the R.F.C. but resigned after a few months to rescue the City National Bank and Trust Company of Chicago, on which he was a board member. Political opponents alleged Dawes had given his bank preferential treatment, and this accusation ended his career in public service.
