Description John Calvin Coolidge Jr. was born in Vermont and became a lawyer, state legislator, mayor, and governor of Massachusetts. His handling of the Boston Police Strike in 1919 enhanced his reputation and led to his election as vice president. Calvin Coolidge assumed the presidency in 1923 upon the death of Warren Harding. While visiting his family home in Vermont, Coolidge was sworn in as president by his father, who was a notary public. Calvin Coolidge was elected to a full term in 1924. His politics were small-government conservative, a theme reasserted in the Reagan Administration. “Silent Cal” was a man of few words.
