28th US Vice President Thomas Marshall

Description Thomas Marshall was the governor of Indiana, an important swing state during the 1912 presidential election.  This resulted in his election as vice president.  As president of the Senate during WWI, he had the Senate adopt its first procedural rule allowing a filibuster to be ended by a two-thirds majority vote. Thomas Marshall’s ideological rift with Wilson resulted in his office being moved away from the White House.  When Wilson was incapacitated by a stroke, Edith Wilson kept Marshall away from the president and uninformed about the president᾽s condition, preventing him from assuming the presidency.  Without strong leadership from the executive branch, the administration᾽s opponents defeated the ratification of the League of Nations, returning the U.S. to an isolationist foreign policy. This U.S. Vice President Thomas Marshall History Mug is part of our U.S. Vice Presidents Series which includes all of the US Vice Presidents. The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
