Description Hannibal Hamlin was a member of U.S. House of Representatives and an active opponent of slavery, opposing the Compromise Measures of 1850. He was the first Republican to hold the office of vice president. He served under Abraham Lincoln from 1861-1865. Hannibal Hamlin was chosen to bring geographic balance to the ticket and because he was a former Democrat. When Lincoln ran for reelection in 1864, Hamlin was replaced by Andrew Johnson, who was a Southern Democrat who Republicans believed would be of value during reconciliation when the war was over. In 1869, Hamlin was elected to the U.S. Senate, serving two terms, before leaving to take the post of the ambassador to Spain.
