Description William King was a delegate to the convention that organized the Alabama state government. After Alabama was admitted as the 22nd state in 1819, he was elected to the U.S. Senate. King was the only U.S. executive official to take the oath of office while on foreign soil. William King was inaugurated in Havana, Cuba, where he was recuperating due to poor health. He was the only vice president from Alabama, and he held the highest political office of any Alabamian in American history. King died of tuberculosis after only 45 days in office, and with the exceptions of John Tyler and Andrew Johnson, both of whom succeeded to the presidency, he is the shortest serving vice president.
