Jackson, William – Civil War

Description William Jackson was a slave serving as a coachman for Jefferson Davis.  Seen by Davis as a menial servant rather than an enemy agent, Jackson was able to listen in on conversations between President Davis and important members of the Confederate Army.  In 1861 Jackson escaped the Davis household, crossed enemy lines and provided the Union with valuable information regarding Confederate supply routes and military strategy.  His actions as a spy were important to the Union war effort. The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
